Swiss watch in global demand again - record in sight for 2011

In recent years Swiss watches have been in demand worldwide again:
Exports increased compared to the crisis of 2009 to one-fifth.

Switzerland exported a similar number of timepieces in 2007. For
this year a new record is in sight.

"Geopolitical disaster could not happen, this year will exceed the
peak value of 2008," said the President of the Federation of Swiss
Watch Industry (FH), Jean-Daniel Pasche, the news agency SDA. 2008 had
the watch exports worth 17 billion francs.

Last year resulted from the industry products worth of 16.2 billion
CHF - these are 22.1 percent more than in 2009. In December, the
increase was even 25.8 percent. "The growth was even more pronounced
than we expected," said Pasche.

Particularly well-priced watches sold in the 200-500 franc and
expensive copies for 3000 francs. Almost 94 percent of foreign sales
made watches with the manufacturers, more than half of all clocks
were made of steel, such as the FH announced on Thursday.

The industry felt the continued economic strength in Asia: In this
region, it resulted in about a third more products. The main market
for the watch industry, Hong Kong, grew by almost 47 percent. China's
fourth largest export destination, grew by 57 percent. Exports to the
U.S. and Europe rose by 14.5 and 10.4 percent.

Only the rosy situation for the watch manufacturer does not look:
The strength of the Swiss franc remains a major concern for
businesses, said President-FH Paschen.

In addition, no growth in exports is a synonymous with higher
profits for the company: Some companies in the industry would continue
to have problems, said Pasche
